Rare Glocks - The longer you collect gun brands, the more nuances and variations you will notice. While manufacturers release all major design changes at once, there are often smaller changes hidden in the firearm's design evolution. Glocks are real treasures for those interested in small variations, and today I found a rare variation.
The 17M design preceded the first Gen 5 and provided inspiration for the evolution of that design. But 17Ms are only made for FBI contracts, so they are usually much less expensive than 5th generation 17s. It is well documented that the first release of Gen 5 lacked some minor framework improvements. One of the changes that was made was to make the slider's front end smaller (similar to the subminiature model adopted from the beginning). However, the original frame didn't line up with those tapered lines, giving it an awkward feeling, as if the slide and frame weren't made for each other.
Rare Glocks
The picture above shows the 17M original factory modification model. The labels were replaced with orange stickers indicating they were reconstructed, so it was impossible to tell if it was a replica of the original FBI blue-labeled gun or the red-labeled Lipsey. However, the blue tabs seen have nDLC coating inside and the red tabs have standard stainless steel parts. This gun has standard edition stainless steel internals, but these red tag guns weren't released until the original block Gen 5 was produced, making them rare. The frame must have been made in the early 17M as it has a misaligned frame/sleeve but no internals that the original FBI pistol would have. It is of course possible that Glock removed nDLC coated parts when upgrading their guns, but it seems extremely unlikely that they used these used parts anywhere else.
Rare, Engraved Glock 19's Are Up For Grabs
The internals remain an unsolved mystery, but this gun confirms that there were many more variants of the 17M, including those with square heads. My variant chart is missing a lot on the 5th generation variant, but we'll get there.
