In 2016, the U.S. Department of Defense awarded Humana Military Healthcare Services a multi-year contract to administer TRICARE, a premier health care program serving 9.6 million Guard and Reserve, active duty, and retired service members.
The Tricare contract is worth $58 billion, which the Department of Defense is splitting between two health care providers, Centene Corporation subsidiary Health Net Federal Services ($17.7 billion) and Humana Military ($40.5 billion), to handle separate regions. Health Net Federal Services manages Tricare's western contracts, while Humana Military manages the eastern contracts.
The consolidation of the two regions reduced the coverage of the former three regions (north, west and south) to the east and west. It also improved coordination between civilian health care providers and military hospitals and clinics in each region.

In February 2017, Humana Government Business Inc. was awarded a one-year contract extension on its current managed care contract for health care for $3.8 billion. The awarding of the Defense Health Agency contract was not an open tender and served as a bridge to ensure the smooth delivery of health benefits management functions and managed care services to more than 3 million Tricare beneficiaries in southern states until implementation in 2017.
